Learning Difficulties Assessments

Full Learning Difficulties Assessment

Are you concerned your child is struggling with their learning but you are not sure why? Have school shared that they are concerned?

A full learning difficulties assessment helps to find areas of learning your child may be struggling with. This is carried out in several stages to ensure a full and accurate picture of your child’s learning profile is built. A comprehensive report is written with recommendations for the best ways to support your child.

Other Assessments

(Price calculated based on assessment)

These assessments help to identify underlying learning difficulties and inform practical, personalised strategies to support progress. They can identify (but can't diagnose) other areas of difficulties including attention difficulties and speech difficulties and can recommend referrals for this to be investigated further.

Targeted assessments focus on specific areas of difficulty, such as

working memory,

processing skills, and

cognitive ability.

What does the Assessment Process look like?

Full cognitive assessment may include the following assessments:

Verbal ability

Visual / non-verbal ability
Working memory
Phonological awareness (how the child uses sounds, blending (putting sounds together) and segmenting (taking words apart into sounds)
Processing speed
Single word reading
Reading comprehension
Expressive Language
Spelling

Maths - (short assessment, this does not go into detail)
Writing (8 years + only)

A full assessment involves:

Gathering background information (parents)

This can be done either through a face-to-face meeting or by completing a questionnaire – whichever suits best.

Gathering background information (school)

Similarly, background information will be requested from the school if appropriate. This can also be completed via a face-to-face meeting or a questionnaire, whichever is preferred.

Getting to know your child
If possible, I try to meet with your child before starting assessments, this will be for around 30 minutes to an hour. This helps them feel comfortable and reduces any anxiety about testing. If the child is in school, they will be asked if they can accommodate an assessment on site, if not alternative arrangements can be made.

Background information analysis

Once all the information is gathered I will review it to determine the most appropriate assessment battery for your child’s needs.

Assessments are usually completed over one session.

After the Assessment

Once all assessments are complete, I analyse the background information and test results. I produce a full assessment report, which usually takes around two to three weeks.

I will then arrange a meeting to go through the report with you. I will also arrange to go through the report with your child's school, if appropriate.

Follow up support is also available once the report has been shared.
