Dyslexia Diagnostic Assessment

Find out more about how the assessment process works.

Gathering background information (parents)

This can be done either through a face-to-face meeting or by completing a questionnaire – whichever suits best.

Visual Difficulties Questionnaire

Parents will complete a brief screening questionnaire relating to visual comfort and visual stress.

Gathering background information (school)

Similarly, background information will be requested from the school. This can also be completed via a face-to-face meeting or a questionnaire, whichever is preferred.

Getting to know your child

A meeting will take place with the child, this will be for around an hour before starting formal assessments. This helps them feel comfortable and reduces any anxiety about testing. School will be asked if they can accommodate an assessment on site, if not alternative arrangements can be made.

Background information analysis

Once all the information is gathered it will be reviewed to determine the most appropriate assessment battery for the child’s needs.

Before the assessment

Assessments are usually completed over two separate sessions (typically two mornings). These may cover:

Verbal ability

Visual / non-verbal ability

Working memory

Phonological awareness

Processing speed

Single word reading

Reading comprehension

Receptive and Expressive Language

Listening Comprehension

Spelling

Writing

Depending on the background information, additional assessments may be included.

During the Assessment

Report and feedback

Once all assessments are complete, the background information and test results are analysed. A full report is produced. This usually takes around two to three weeks.
